I don't really know where to begin with this one. This song is meant to be part II to "Bookends," the first track on this record. I wrote it at the same time as that song. Around then I was spending a lot of my time in DC, on friend's couches, or meandering down familiar streets, but living at my parent's house in Germantown. This was after H4's second house, The Bananarchy Stand (Arrested Development reference), fell apart.
We had all been living together in group houses for the past two years. And you stumble into something that begins to feel like family, only to have it erode away like most things do, it can be pretty disheartening and leave you a bit bewildered, emotionally and physically. But hope can still be found in the unspoken social contract of, "I got a couch. You can sleep on it." And friendships can persist through big life changes. And what failed yesterday didn't make the fun you had trying irrelevant.
So that's the setting. The actual plot is a very literal stream of conscious and an account of two different days, tied together by a chorus about waking up on a friend's air mattress next to someone you love.
I guess at it's heart this is a love song.
lyrics
biking around downtown in the cold
spiraling in 4 foot wide circles on Lamont
no where to go and no one to call
just a few sheets of paper and my own head to crawl into
i got a full key ring with no open doors
can i crash at your place tonight? i just need a floor
the reminiscing has been killing me
i don't know what burns worse, whiskey or the memories
these streets tell so many stories
i couldn't hope to hear them all
faded memories I still hold close to me
i love waking up to you
i love waking up to you
walking down 18th huddled in the cold
if this city's leaking water then I guess we are the mold
two friends rocking the sinking ship of youth
i'm not distressed as long as I got you
with other people I never know what to say
the relentless sense of sincerity
and security that you give to me
i hope it always stays that way
your eyes tell so many stories
i couldn't hope to hear them all
faded memories I still hold close to me
i love waking up to you
i love waking up to you
she said, "the east coast raised me all bitter longing and hopeful
for a future that's never gonna come
the west coast broke me
i don't know if I know how to be loved
drunken epiphanies in DC, in Vancouver,
in my parents house serve to show ourselves
what we're really all about
and that we're good and we deserve to be loved
i love waking up to you
i love waking up to you
the east coast raised me all bitter longing and hopeful
for a future that's never gonna come
the west coast broke me
i don't know if I know how to be loved
the east coast raised me all bitter longing and hopeful
for a future that's never gonna come
the west coast broke me
i don't know if I know how to be loved
and it sounds just like a broken record
east side, west side man whatever
man whatever
man whatever!
Big and fuzzy and full of right angles and off-kilter hooks, there's a lot of '90s DC/Baltimore DIY tradition in this newer DC band. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 26, 2017
Powerful in every way, this DC hardcore group's first full-length is the siren song to having no home as a person of color—in punk, in society, in America. It could not have arrived at a more appropriate time. Bandcamp Album of the Day Jul 15, 2016
Ragged and forceful, this D.C. indie rock "supergroup" takes aim at gentrification and the subsequent deadening of underground culture. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 10, 2016
